Opinion | The bite is to save thousands of U.S. citizens trapped in Afghanistan

An administration official who was not authorized to speak in the case told me that there are an estimated 10,000 U.S. citizens in the country, the vast majority in or near Kabul. Some are residents, journalists or relief workers who may not want to leave. Most are struggling to escape. Some are dual nationals or children of Americans who may not have the right passport or visa, but the State Department has not told them how to arrange their paperwork.
